To future Membership Secretaries: Here's an example of what to send to new members. This was written by Ian Strock of Greater New York Mensa, and modified by Laurie Strock, our current Membership Secretary. You can write your own if you want. If you use this, be sure to read it through, fill in correct data, and make sure every part of it is still current. Ultimately, what you sign your name to is your letter. -Bill Hees, 12/13/1998

Dear <new member name>,
Hi! I'm the Membership Secretary of Boston Mensa, and I just found out that you're a new member of Mensa. Since you live in our area, you're a member of our local group. Welcome!
By now you should have received the current issue of the Beacon, Boston Mensa’s local newsletter. It's got articles and information on the local group, as well as our calendar of events. As a member of Mensa, you're welcome to attend any or all of the events listed. If you didn’t receive one, please let me know and I’ll send you one. When you do decide to come to a meeting or get-together, please give us a chance: Mensa is like a big group of friends, so we may seem a bit insular or "cliquish"--but it's simply because we haven't had a chance to get to know you yet. We're very friendly.
If you're electronically connected, you might want to check out the Usenet group rec.org.mensa (it's not run by Mensa, so there's a very high noise-to-signal ratio). If you're on CompuServe, GO MENSA gets you to the Mensa Forum. The Mensa web page is at http://www.mensa.org .
If you have any questions about your membership, feel free to give me, or anyone listed on the inside cover of the Beacon, a call. We're all volunteer members, who work for the organization because we like it and enjoy being part of it.
Congratulations on joining Mensa, and welcome to the group. I hope you'll enjoy your membership as much as I have for the last 4 years.
Sincerely,
<membership secretary name>
