To future Membership Secretaries: Here's a sample letter of what to send out, along with a brochure, to prospective members who call the Mensaphone. You can write your own if you want. This is what Wendy Birchmire used, and I updated it slightly and sanitized it for the web. Be sure to read it through, fill in correct phone numbers, and make sure every part of it is still current. Ultimately, what you sign your name to is your letter. -Bill Hees, 10/16/1998

Dear Ben,

Thank you for calling the Boston MensaPhone. Boston Mensa has just under 1000 members who are a totally mixed bunch. Some are young, old, rich, poor, and everything in between. We have people from all backgrounds and everyone seems to find something that interests them.

Boston Mensa extends out as far as Worcester and the events that take place are in many locales. There are home parties, dining out, games nights, physical activities (mountain climbing, rollerblading, walks), and weekend getaways. Sometimes we even have intellectual discussion groups! Above all, Boston

Mensa is a social organization where people come together to enjoy each other's company.

Each month we publish a newsletter called, the 'Beacon', that lists upcoming events. Some events are always there and others change as members offer new activities. If you decide to join us in Mensa, your dues will pay for your membership, a subscription to the national newsletter, and a copy of the Beacon. By looking through our publication you can see what interests you most, and perhaps, call the host or hostess if you need more information. You are welcome to attend a few events while you are deciding whether this organization is for you. You can even bring a guest!

If you can qualify for membership on the basis of prior tests scores, you are on your way to membership. If not, there are scheduled tests in a variety of places. To find the location of the next one, you can call our Test Coordinator, David Fox, at (508) xxx-xxxx.

I will be calling you some time in the near future to see if you have any questions. If you would like to call me instead, please feel free to call up to 9:30 P.M. My number is (781) xxx-xxxx. I look forward to speaking with you.

Sincerely,
